“I want my startup to be big and dominate the world”
This might occur in all business owners’ heads when they are building a startup business, but some have no clear roadmap on how they should treat their business, having a team of 5 is easy to manage, but what have they prepared to expand their business?
As written by Seppo Helava, the Co-Founder of Wonderspark.co, he shared some tips on how to effectively manage a Startup team.
I think when the team’s 5, you probably don’t even need a daily standup, because most everyone will always know what most everyone is working on. For my current team of 4, we do a Monday morning meeting, just to make sure we’re on the same page, and that’s it. Everything else happens through incidental communication, Slack, or just a quick on-demand sort of chat.
When the team at my previous company started to grow, that didn’t really change until we got to about 15. Then we’d do a more formal weekly meeting with a little bit more structure, and we started to introduce more in the way of task-tracking and the like.
Things started to get to the point where a little more structure was needed at about 25. And by the time you get to 50, you’ve got full-time people whose primary job (practically speaking) is managing communication & coordinating people.
I think the question of “effective management”, though, has a pretty simple answer:
Treat people like individuals.
If you want to get the most out of people, retain the flexibility to treat people as individuals for as long as humanly possible. Some people need more flexibility. Some people need more structure. Some people need more direction, some people need more autonomy. Some people will be out sick, or need to deal with family stuff, or want to work later, or earlier, or whatever. And your job, if you want to manage them effectively, is to know what someone needs to maximize performance and then let them do it.
And how about your HR management? As the company grows, the complexity also gets bigger. HReasily helps to streamline and automate your HR payroll calculations, leave & claim management, also a touchless absenteeism method all in a single platform.
